Globally, the lack of access to safe and affordable sanitary supplies combined with the taboo of menstruation means low-income women and girls are missing days of work and school at rates that have a significant impact on their families’ economic prospects and their countries’ gross domestic product. Since educating women and girls has a major impact on reducing poverty, this problem is a serious obstacle in efforts to raise economic standards in developing countries.
